My definition of situational awareness is: the ability to identify and process environmental cues to accurately predict the actions of others. When most people think of situational awareness, they probably think of someone sitting with their back to the wall in a restaurant or constantly looking over their shoulder, but real situational awareness goes quite a bit deeper than that. It involves equal measures of comprehension, planning, and intuition.

My goal has always been to take what’s relevant in the world of situational awareness and boil that information down to its most straightforward concepts, which can then be easily implemented in your daily lives. The techniques and exercises I write about work for everyone—parents, small children walking to school, teenagers going off to college, and whole families headed out on summer vacation. When properly applied, the system I teach will help improve your general understanding of how, when, and where violence occurs. It will also increase your chances of successfully detecting and avoiding danger no matter where in the world you may find yourself.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you take note of entrances and exits when in a new location?
  • Do you easily allow strangers inside your personal space?
  • Do you frequently check your surroundings while in public?
  • Do you know the behavioral changes that accompany violence?
  • Do you know how to tell if you’re being watched?
  • Do you know how to react appropriately if you find yourself in a violent situation?

If your answer to these questions was no, you might need to learn more about situational awareness and its use.

Absolutely not. Situational awareness is a matter of understanding your environment, reading behaviors within that environment, and determining the best course of action based on what you see. The most important aspect of this is simply to be engaged with your environment instead of ignoring what’s happening around you. This skill can be taught at all ages and is a fantastic way to keep the whole family involved and working together.

Yes, you can. I will tailor any keynote event or training session to fit your audience and ensure everyone walks away with new, potentially lifesaving skills and information. I base all my courses on real-world experience and training gained from a 30-year career in international counter-terror operations. I put all this knowledge and information into simple-to-understand terms that can be easily applied as soon as you walk out the door. Just click on the “Book Gary” tab now. You won’t be disappointed!
